You don t need to sand the whole van but i would recommend it as it gives the paint something to key to. Sand down smooth to around a 600 grade finish. Fill all the little holes and rust spots. If you ve ever painted dormers or half gables on the outside of a house you know that resting a paint can while working on a rooftop can really be tricky.

Paint the roof of your car using either a brush or a spray gun. Once the paint goes on all the blemishes will be highlighted and can spoil what would be an otherwise smart van.
