Painting Plastic Window Sashes

Position a 6 wide putty knife against the sash and glass.

Peel the masking liquid off the glass. Apply a bead of the glazing to the inside of the frame image 1 on all four sides. After two top coats have been applied and dried use a razor knife to cut a clean line between the window glass and the wood. Proper painting will protect the putty and keep the window functio.

Slide the inner sash down and slide the outer sash up use the unpainted cross member to pull the outer sash up to expose the top half of the outer sash above the inner sash.

These areas are not seen or readily exposed to the elements so there is no cosmetic reason to paint them but there is a more practical reason not to paint them.

Repeat the process with the obstructed sash areas. All the sashes on the windows were already black and because i liked the palette when we changed the body and trim colors we kept the black window trim. Paint the sash and allow the paint to dry. By leaving these areas bare you allow both rails horizontal parts of the sash frame and both stiles vertical parts of the sash frame to expel moisture. Furthermore the casing supports an opening in the wall and the paint job should show that structure.
